What is mead?
Mead is an alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey. It’s often called “honey wine,” and it’s one of the oldest drinks in the world - dating back thousands of years. We make our mead in Aotearoa using local honey and natural methods, with no synthetic additives.
-
Is mead really sweet?
Not necessarily. While mead is made from honey, it doesn’t have to taste sugary. We ferment most of the natural sugars out, leaving a semi-dry to lightly sweet finish that highlights the character of the honey without overwhelming your palate.
-
How strong is mead?
Our meads range from 9% to 13% alcohol by volume (abv), depending on the batch. That’s similar to a glass of wine.
-
Is your mead gluten-free?
Yes — 100%. Our mead is made from honey, not grains, so it’s naturally gluten-free. We don’t add anything containing gluten at any stage of production. And, we don’t use artificial additives or preservatives either.
-
Mead vs honey wine - explain?
Mead is the broad category — a alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey. "Honey wine" refers to a group of mead varieties that are made to the strength and feel of grape wine: clear, balanced, and refined. That’s the style we make - clean, drinkable meads that highlight the flavour of New Zealand.
-
How do you drink mead?
However you like, it’s a highly flexible beverage. You can chill it, drink it at room temperature, or warm as a mulled mead in winter. We serve ours in wine glasses or small ceramic cups, depending on the mood and the season. Mead can be a great cocktail ingredient!
-
How long does mead last?
Unopened mead is remarkably stable - it can age gracefully for decades, even a century or more, when stored in a cool, dark place. In Polish-Lithuanian tradition, mead was sometimes buried underground and aged for “100 years or more,” developing rich, nuanced flavours over time.
Once opened, our mead will stay fresh longer than most wines. Simply reseal the bottle, keep it out of sunlight and it will remain delicious for six weeks or more.
-
How long does mead take to make?
Our mead ferments over 2–3 weeks, then we age it for 1–3 months, depending on the variety. Some batches need longer for the flavours to settle, others are ready to bottle sooner. We take the time each one needs to taste just right.
-
Where do you make it?
We make our mead in Ōtautahi Christchurch, from a small meadery in Riccarton. Undisturbed is made in a hands-on, micro-batch approach. Our production is fully licensed and compliant with NZ food and alcohol regulations.
-
Is it true that mead has health benefits?
Long associated with wellness - especially when made from raw honey and herbs. While we don't make health claims, drinkers of mead report more mild hangovers. People appreciate that our mead is naturally gluten-free, low in residual sugar, chemical free. Of course as with any alcohol, moderation is key.
-
Where do you get your honey from?
We source from beekeepers across Te Waipounamu (South Island), including co-ops in Ōtautahi and those with hives in the native forests of Nelson Lakes. Our honeys - including kānuka, mānuka, honeydew, and clover - are seasonal and each brings its own flavour to the final mead.
-
How sustainable is your mead?
We reckon it’s one of the most sustainable drinks you’ll find. Our mead is made from local honey, with no irrigation, no imported ingredients, and no synthetic additives. Many of our honeys come from native forests, where bees pollinate and forage without disturbing the land.
Everything’s fermented and bottled in Ōtautahi, keeping food miles low. We offer discounts on returned bottles for reuse - and our low-waste packaging (goons, coming soon) cuts carbon by up to 87% compared to glass.
-
Are you licensed to sell alcohol?
Yes. We are fully licensed to sell alcohol online in New Zealand. [View licence]
When selling at events and markets we get specific licenses for this from the relevant Council.
